Born in Providence, Pennsylvania, daughter of David Gaston Garlick and Elizabeth Buck. The autobiography includes the following; her mother's early affiliation with the Christian Church; conversion of her mother and sisters to Mormonism, 1837; her own conversion and baptism by Joseph Smith in the Mississippi River, 1840; family persecutions; family migration to Illinois where they were settlers at Commerce (later Nauvoo); activities in the Female Relief Society of Nauvoo; martyrdom of Joseph Smith; mantle of the Prophet on Brigham Young; marriage to William Howard Avery; his deaht, 1847; arrival in Salt Lake Valley, 1853; removal to Springville, Utah; marriage to Elam Cheney, 1854; removal to Huntington, Utah, where she served as Relief Society president; removal to Jackson Hole, Wyoming in 1893. The biography contains further etails on earlier and later life.
